Chachapoyas, the ¨warriors of the clouds¨
Northern Peru is still a very poor area. It has little attraction for tourism because tourists tend to focus their holiday time in the southern part of the country.
However, during the last 2 years, the tourism in the northern Peru started to grow. There are many archaeological and natural sites such as the ruins of Kuelap, the burial sites as Revash and Karajía, the Gocta waterfall and the Huaylla Belem valley, .....
The main town and the greatest point of tourism concentration in the Amazonas region is the city of Chachapoyas. This city is located at an altitude of 2,235 meters (7,657 feet). It has a population of about 30,000 people. Nestled in the mountains, away from the Peruvian coast, Chachapoyas remains fairly isolated from the other regions of Peru. There are daily bus services from Chiclayo and Cajamarca to Chachapoyas. There is also a local airport but flight services are limited. The limited transport is also the cause of its low tourism. The Amazonas region has little interest for investors and that is why the only real rich city in this area is the town of Chachapoyas. All the little villages around the city are relatively poor and live mainly on agriculture and cattle farming.
However, there is in this area a real potential for tourism development for people who want to see something different than the south of Peru, but there is also a need for the development of an NGO (non-governmental organization) organizing educational programs and community work .
That's why I chose the Chachapoyas region to create and develop a social and educational NGO.
